Made with Prema is a culinary, cultural love letter, because food is the love letter that Prema writes to her ancestors, family and friends every time she steps into the kitchen. She writes this love letter to her South Asian sisters in Canada who created community for her and her family over the past 50 years. She writes this love letter to her family and community when they gather around the table, through each dish, filling their stomachs, hearts, home and lives with indescribable love.
The name Prema means LOVE in Sanskrit. Every single recipe brings you into her kitchen so that as you bring these pages to life in your own kitchen, you can be assured that the dishes you make are made with Prema - they are made with love.
This book includes sample meal plans and recipes that span the full spectrum of delicious experiences from soups to salads, traditional rice dishes to South Indian mainstays like idli and dosa, desserts to homemade beverages, organized by theme (full Table of Contents included). In the appendices, Prema gives you the scoop on how to make your own masala pastes and spicy powders, so you can make every element from scratch if you choose to. This is no ordinary cookbook. It is a celebration of the diversity and richness of the author’s journey with food.
"Today is a special day because I get to introduce you to Prema and her son Prasanna. I have been working on a special project with them for the past two years and my heart has been bursting to tell you all about it!!" - says Rupi Kaur, famous poet who is behind this project.
"When my dear friend Prasanna told me about about how his mother was documenting her inherited and reimagined family recipes in a simple word doc I couldn't help but think about all the beautiful stories those dishes have shared through the generations. Prasanna had a dream to publish his mother's work as a book and I wanted to be a part of the journey to bring it to life."
Let Prema and Prasanna take you on a delicious journey of recipes that have been passed on from generations and have traveled across oceans. This labour of love is truly a testament to the power held in the artistry of cooking and it is a celebration of vibrant South Asian flavours. One of the many translations of a mother’s love.
Both authors have experienced significant vision loss throughout their lives. All of their proceeds from this book are being donated to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind.
Prema is an Indo-Canadian business owner, culinary expert, innovator, and teacher with over 50 years of experience. She has taught cooking classes in Ottawa, Regina and Saskatoon and catered feasts and charitable fundraisers for a range of organizations with her authentic recipes. "Prema is an Indian immigrant woman and entrepreneur. Her artistry and legacy lives through the cuisine she has shared with her community. My team and i learned everythinggggg from manuscript editing to food photography to book design and print. Publishing this book was a journey of trial. Error. And triumph. But holding it in our hands is like embracing and honouring not only prema's life’s work but the lives of so many other immigrant mothers." - said Kaur.
Prasanna is a lawyer, diversity and inclusion professional, speaker, writer, editor, correspondent, and social media strategist.
